Suzuki Education Institute of Ireland

Teacher Training

The SEIi provides Teacher Training Courses in Violin, Cello, Piano, and Guitar in accordance with the regulations of the European Suzuki Association (ESA) which is the examining body.

Please refer to specific information about your instrument and the courses provided on the right side of the page.

Course Structure:

The Violin and Piano courses are held during 2-3 day weekends in New Inn, Co. Galway; and one Suzuki Summer Camp (which alternates around the country) amounting to 20 – 24 Course days. Level 1 on all instruments is 150 hours while all other levels are 120 hours, which includes 20 hours (minimum) of observation arranged by the trainee.

The Guitar course is run in blocks of 5 days in St. Raphaela’s School in Stillorgan in Dublin.

The Cello course is currently being planned. Check back for more details.

An ESA examination or assessment at the end of the course is obligatory.

Entrance Requirements: General Education:

  • Leaving Certificate or its equivalent and
  • 20 years old or enrolled in a full-time 3rd Level Course.

Performance requirements:

  • Traditional instrumentalists should be able to play reels up to tempo and  Grade 3 Associated Board standard theory.

Any teacher who does not have a Level 3 teaching qualification may not set up a teaching practice using the Suzuki name unless they are attending the Teacher Training course on a regular basis or are teaching in a Suzuki school, education scheme or group which includes a Suzuki teacher who has attained at least a Level 3 training level. Candidates applying for Teacher Training on a 2nd instrument but with a strong 1st instrument standard or a degree in music or equivalent, may be accepted with a lower entry standard of violin/cello/piano performance.
